Bearwood Enrichment

Enrichment Opportunities

At Bearwood, we are proud to offer a rich tapestry of enrichment opportunities that inspire our children to live out the Bearwood Belief every day. Through exciting educational visits, inspiring visitors, and a wide range of pupil-led initiatives, our children are empowered to live their learning, discover their talents, and ignite their ambitions. From the Bearwood Brilliance Award to active roles in our School Council and Peer Mentor programme, pupils are given meaningful chances to make a difference and become true change agents within our school community.

Our enrichment programme goes far beyond the classroom, providing unforgettable experiences that nurture curiosity, creativity, and confidence. Explore our enrichment plans below and join us on our learning adventures — where there are no horizons, only possibilities.

All children have the chance to take part in our Bearwood Brilliance Award.

The Bearwood Brilliance Award is designed to support children in developing self-confidence and independence from an early age, helping them begin to take responsibility for themselves.

Children need the opportunity to engage in a variety of experiences where they can learn new and diverse skills independently. These opportunities nurture their self-esteem, which plays a vital role in their overall development.

By completing a series of tasks throughout each school year, children will be able to practice age-appropriate life skills and strengthen their confidence in becoming more independent.

There are twelve challenge areas:

  • Exercise and learning new things

  • Eco

  • Safety

  • Cooking

  • Around the home

  • Looking after myself

  • Non-physical hobby

  • Public service

  • Careers

  • Oracy

  • Little Leaders

  • Personal Achievement

The Little Leaders challenge is one of the tasks that is completed within school time and encourages children to take on a specific job within school. As part of our career related learning, these roles have to be applied for and the job description needs to be understood and performed in order for the "line managers" to sign them off.

Roles include:

  • Office Angels
  • Eco Council
  • Sports Ambassadors
  • Librarians

At Bearwood, our School Council plays a vital role in giving our pupils a voice and helping shape the future of our school. We believe that children’s ideas matter, as part of our Bearwood Belief – ‘Hear my voice’, and through the School Council, pupils have the opportunity to share their thoughts, make decisions, and take action to improve school life for everyone.

Our School Council is made up of elected representatives from each class who meet regularly to discuss important issues, plan exciting projects, and work together with staff and governors. From organising fundraising events and improving playground facilities to promoting healthy eating, our councillors are actively involved in making Bearwood a better place to learn and grow.

Being a School Councillor is a serious responsibility. Councillors learn how to lead meetings, take minutes, report back to their classes, and turn big ideas into achievable action plans. They also help ensure that every pupil’s voice is heard — whether through suggestion boxes, surveys, or class discussions.

We’re proud of the work our School Council does and the difference it makes. It’s a brilliant example of teamwork, leadership, and pupil participation in action. Currently, our children have been discussing what it means to be safe at our school and fundraising for our ‘pink headphones’ (immersive Now Press Play Curriculum opportunities).

At Bearwood, we ensure that all our children feel that they belong and are part of our school. We run a team of peer mentors to ensure that children have the tools to mend friendships, spot the signs of bullying, and help promote positive mental wellbeing. Our peer mentors also help to lead our Anti-Bullying Week each year. (Link to Anti-Bullying page)

Being a Peer Mentor is a very responsible role. Peer Mentors look after children who may be upset or worried and help ensure that playtimes are fun and enjoyable for everyone. For example, if someone doesn't have a game to play or is waiting for a friend, Peer Mentors will invite them to join in and help them feel included.

Peer Mentors are trained to help resolve small disagreements calmly, without taking sides or becoming involved in arguments. They understand when to support independently and when to seek help from an adult if needed. Their role ensures that every child has someone of their own age they can talk to — someone who listens, understands, and cares.

Taking place every Friday afternoon, Your Time provides an opportunity for pupils and staff to connect. Thirty minutes is dedicated to developing relationships and connections; this is done through planned ‘Your Time’ activities following the interests of the children.

Here are some examples of what the children have the opportunity to do:

  • Art activities – helping with displays around school, creating props for school performances, or showing their creative flair in their own art projects.
  • Calm activities – mindfulness, listen/talk time.
  • Sport activities – opportunities to enjoy a range of sports and dance.
  • Gardening/Landscaping activities – keeping plants healthy, watering, and maintaining our garden area.
  • Site Manager activities – a chance to spend time with Mr Cooper and help look after our school site (our children love litter picking!).

Clubs and Opportunities

As well as a broad range of after-school clubs on offer, we also run clubs during the school lunch hour including a Library Club and our School Choir. This means there are plenty of opportunities for children to get involved and take part in a wide range of activities. We regularly ask the children which clubs they would like to see at our school, and often we are able to respond to their interests.
